Summer Thematic Unit – We're Going on a Safari!

Book of the Week: Tarzan by Disney


What We Did On Monday: We began our day by playing with our Build and Stack City pieces (to learn how pieces and be mixed and matched to build various things) and our electronic learning toys (to learn colors, numbers, shapes, and letters). Then we enjoyed Independent Reading Time (IRT) where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. After that, I introduced the BOTW and the SOTW. Later we played with our Little People playsets (to develop our imaginations),
kitchen toys (to develop our imagination), dress-up with our jungle animal masks (to develop our imaginations and learn about jungle animals), toy cars (to develop fine motor skills) and balls (to develop gross motor skills).



Special Enrichment for Monday: We made a delicious Banana-Apple Slurp Jungle Juice smoothie! We also each got a Jungle Animal Tattoo. Later in the day we played our Safari Animal Adventures CD-ROM.



What We Did On Tuesday: We started our day off by playing with our Lincoln Logs set and building with our Duplo blocks (to develop fine motor skills). Then we enjoyed IRT where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. Then we sang the SOTW and read the BOTW. Later in the day, we also played with our dollhouse (to learn to match parts of a room with the room and to develop our imaginations), musical instruments (to learn about the sounds of and parts of various instruments), kitchen toys (to develop our imagination), worked with our links (to learn to connect).



Special Enrichment for Tuesday: We played our Find Sock Monkey Game! This is a blast to play. You have to ask Yes or No questions to determine where Sock Monkey is hiding! We made Elephant masks during art time. We worked on our jungle themed puzzles.


What We Did On Wednesday: We began our day by playing dress-up with our jungle animal masks (to develop our imaginations and learn about jungle animals) and exploring our Laugh and Learn Home (to develop our gross motor skills). Then we enjoyed IRT where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. Then we read the BOTW and sang the SOTW. After that, we enjoyed playing with our Franklin Goes to School Board Game (to learn about numbers, letters, shapes, counting, colors and taking turns!) and our kitchen toys (to develop our imagination). We also took turns playing our Chutes and Ladders CD-ROM.



Special Enrichment for Wednesday: We went to Catch Air Marietta! We had such a blast exploring this place! There are all kinds of inflatables, including a coconut tree you can swing on, teeter-totters, slides, tunnels, a light up dance floor that lights up where you move, merry-go-round and more! We brought kids from ages 1-10 and they ALL enjoyed themselves and had plenty to do!!!





What We Did On Thursday:  We started our day off by exploring our Laugh and Learn Home (to develop our gross motor skills) and playing with our electronic learning toys (to learn colors, numbers, shapes, and letters). Then we enjoyed IRT where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. Then we sang the SOTW and read the BOTW. Later in the day, we also played with our kitchen toys (to develop our imagination), jungle animals (to learn the names of, sounds made by and to develop our imaginations), toy cars (to develop fine motor skills), balls (to develop gross motor skills), ride on toys (to develop gross motor skills), built with our bumpy blocks (to learn about textures and to learn to interlock) and worked with our busy beads (to learn to connect).



Special Enrichment for Thursday: We played in our Safari Water Table with jungle animal themed toys!




What We Did On Friday: We began our day by playing with our baby dolls (to learn how to be nurturing and sympathetic of the feelings of others) and exploring our Laugh and Learn Home (to develop our gross motor skills). Then we enjoyed IRT where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. Then we read the BOTW and sang the SOTW. After that, we enjoyed playing with our indoor slide (to develop our gross motor skills), LeapFrog Farm animal magnet set (to learn to match an animal's front and back halves) and built with our Duplo blocks (to develop fine motor skills).



Special Enrichment for Friday: We had a great time dressing up with our jungle animal masks (to develop our imaginations and learn about jungle animals)! We spent a long time roaring and braying and scuffing our "feet" and making all kinds of fun animals noises and behaviors!



What We Did On Saturday: We started our day by building with our alphabet blocks (to learn to stack) and our toy binoculars (to learn how to see things various ways). Then we enjoyed IRT where we focused this week on putting our book back on the bookshelf when we are finished reading it. Then we sang the SOTW and read the BOTW. Later in the day, we also played with our dinosaurs (to learn about their similarities and differences), had fun with our Lights and Sounds Show toy (to learn the sounds of various instruments and to learn cause and effect), Mr. Potato Heads (to learn about body parts) and played with our toy trains (to learn how simple machines work and how to intersect the train tracks).



Special Enrichment for Saturday: We played our Toddler Jumpstart CD-ROM!!!
