Review and Giveaway for Lunette Cup (Ends 11/11/12 US/Can/Mex Only)

I have been using mama cloth pads for almost a year now and I kept hearing about menstrual cups. I was curious. I wanted to be able to get rid of ALL of my disposable menstrual products. I began to do some research on a couple of different brands of menstrual cups. Two specific things that I read stuck with me - that for a woman with a tilted uterus (like I have), Lunette Cup was definitely the way to go and that they are made of medical grade silicone, not latex (I am allergic to latex). So I contacted Lunette Cup and asked them about doing a review. I was so excited when they agreed!

Here is a little blurb from their website (www.lunette.com):

Lunette — A Menstrual Cup
Over the past 70 years, a woman's choice for internal menstrual care has pretty much been limited to tampons. Wouldn't you like something better, something . . . nicer?
Now there is an alternative that is healthier for our bodies, our environment and our pocketbook — the Lunette menstrual cup.
Made in Finland, the Lunette menstrual cup is an easy-to-use, safe, and clean alternative to pads and tampons. Using a Lunette is similar to using a tampon but requires less changing. Made of medical-grade silicone, a non-friendly environment for bacteria, menstrual cups are simply washed and reused. Not to mention, menstrual cups create zero waste. That's nice!

Are you wondering what a menstrual cup IS? And how to use one?

This is the one that I chose:

The coral Lunette Aine menstrual cup

I chose this color simply because of the meaning behind it's name - "Áine is the Goddess of moon, love, fertility and Midsummer in Irish mythology." With us having worked through so many fertility issues, it just seems fitting. I also thought that the color would help conceal any possible stains.

Why should you use a menstrual cup? They are SUPER eco-friendly! Lunette summed up the "Whys" really well here.

Lunette cups come in two different sizes. There is a size guide available on their website that can really work well at helping you to figure out what size is best for you. I love how detailed the size guide is. It truly made me feel like I was selecting the perfect size for me.

Lunette Cup's website has a FAQ section that I also found to be very helpful in making the decision to want to have a Lunette Cup of my very own. I highly recommend that you read it too to ensure that you are well informed. :)

And did you know that there is NO association between menstrual cups and Toxic Shock Syndrome like there is with tampons?

Are you wondering HOW one goes about using a Lunette Cup? It really isn't as difficult as it may look - they are very flexible! Here is how Lunette explains it:

How to use the Lunette menstrual cup

Lunette also some other related products, too. Check them out here.

Lunette Cups can be purchased at various U.S. retailers (listed here) and many international retailers (listed here) as well! You can also buy them online!

There was an adjustment period to using the Lunette Cup. I personally found it easy to remove, empty and clean in the shower - but difficult to reinsert while in the shower. After some practice, by my second cycle, I could reinsert it in the shower. It took some tweaking to learn exactly where it fit the most comfortably once inserted. At first, I was checking how full it was quite frequently because I wasn't sure what was "normal vs heavy flow". Because I have Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, I wasn't sure if my flow was too heavy. However, all checking it more often did was provide me with more practice of reinserting it because flow-wise, things were just fine.

After using the Lunette Cup for two cycles, I have not had any "overflow" issues, which was a concern of mine. I had that problem often with tampons. I am happy to say good riddance to tampons! :D

The only very minor issue that I had with my Lunette Cup was that the airholes seem to clog easily. This may be individual and specific to my flow vs clot ratio though.

Overall, I am very pleased with my Lunette Cup and am very proud to now eliminate one more disposable  item from our household (AND our household budget!).

I have been asked to tell you that if you should wish to make a purchase - "Here is a way for customers to get a $10 off code at our shop.  First, they have to "like" us.  Then go to https://www.facebook.com/Lunettecup/app_304103309676741 (Tab "What is Lunette?" and scroll to bottom of page).  If they have "liked" us, they will be able to see the coupon code.  Otherwise it will be blurred out."

Happy shopping!

  1. Thank you for this review. I have been toying with the idea of getting a cup. I dispise the tampon (they don't work and they are a pain), But I always worry about how heavy my cycle is too and my clots (I usually have quite a few).
I haven't start my PP cycle yet, but with a $10 off coupon I might have to get one now and test it out when the time comes.

    1. You are very welcome! I was hoping that someone was also thinking about getting a menstrual cup and that this review could help them with the decision. I also believe that the $10 coupon makes it a worthwhile time to buy - eventually your cycle will return :)

  2. I used a Lunnette before getting pregnant, but didn't knew it was the best for tilted uterus (which is what I have :) ). I guess I've made the right choice with a lot of luck ;))

  6. I love my Lunette, too! A tip about cleaning the air-holes: in the dental section of your local supermarket (we have a local chain that's like Walmart but better) you can buy disposable interdental brushes. They sell them for brushing behind braces. That's what I use to clean the holes. They come in a tiny package of around 20. Works like a charm!

  7. By the way, the captcha to comment is nearly impossible to do. Every option has a picture and they are so blurry or distorted that I had to refresh over 50 times before I found one I could read!

  8. The "subscribe by email" only subscribes you to comments on that post. I did that, but I want to subscribe to the actual blog. In the mean time, I added it to that same email address's RSS feed until they get their "subscribe" option working. Please to message me if you figure something else out!

  11. I had the same problem as Christine to subscribe to Lunette's blog... The color I'd like is the Cynthia. I would buy one in small size, and maybe the Lunette wash for my cup. I didn't buy anything, especially since I couldn't find the coupon code on their facebook page... :( I did like though. Julie M.

  12. I didn't buy anything yet, I was trying to see the coupon code on facebook but couldn't... Also couldn't subscribe to Lunette's blog like Christine. My favourite color is the Cynthia, and I'd like to get one, perhaps with the wash. (my first comment didn't show) Julie M.

  15. I didn't buy anything yet. I'm in that wonderful period free breastfeeding stage and I'm saving the money I would be spending on tampons to buy a menstrual cup in a couple of months. If I win this I might have to treat myself to something else. :)

  16. I'd prefer the clear version. I just think it would be easier to maintain since I could easily see anything amiss.

  17. I would love to buy the MoodSmooth lotion. It sounds divine!

  19. I really like the selene version of the cup. Such a pretty blue I always stare at it when I see it. It almost glows!

  20. I'd like the clear version of the cup, even though the selene is really beautiful, I think with the clear version I would be able to clean it better and more thoroughly. I'd like the cup wipes from the shop those would come in really handy on the go. Thanks for this opportunity!

  21. I have tried to post 2-3 other times and none have shown! Time for a different browser...Finally attempting at posting one condensed comment to answer all of your questions!

My favorite color is the Diane (in real life, too!) I was waiting on the shipment and decided to order one in a bit of an impulsive decision! I was hesitant for a while because I wasn't sure how it would work out with my body (size, stiffness, capacity, etc.) I guess I'll be finding out, now!

I like the wipes as well, though I don't have money to purchase them currently. Maybe another time!

    1. Brainstorm with me a little - how different is it than using tampons? It comes with a carrying case to be discreet in your purse or pocket. They sell separate wipes and wash to use while on the go. In a pinch, you can wipe it clean with toilet paper even. :)
