Review with Giveaway for Smoobee - No Cry Hairbrush (US Only, Ends 05/12/13)

For as long as I can remember, brushing Daniella's hair has been a nightmare. She was born with a thick, full head of hair and it just hasn't stopped. She gets it from me, poor child. Having thick hair on a young child can making hair brushing difficult, I have tried combs designed for thick hair for her and while that was better than regular hair brushes and combs, it was still a battle (DAILY) that I hated to have with her. Then I heard about the Smoobee - No Cry Hairbrush so I asked them about doing a review - Daniella was just as excited when they agreed. Her eyes lit up when she first saw her new pretty purple hairbrush.

(Sorry, the picture had major glare issues!)

Right from the start, she asked if SHE COULD BRUSH HER OWN HAIR! She never before asked this!

She then let me take a try. She fussed some while I brushed, but it was NOT a crying, screaming match like it used to be. And that is how it has mostly been since. She still doesn't LIKE to get her hair brushed, but it isn't the daily battle that it once was and for that, I am VERY grateful!

I like how thick and sturdy the handle is!

Look how thick and chunky this is! And yet, it isn't heavy! It's gentle bristles are uniquely designed to effectively brush through wet or dry hair without snagging or catching. Smoobee is made out of beautiful wood - strong and durable and hand assembled to the best quality. They have a lifetime warranty and a 100% refund, no questions asked policy. Smoobee is also an award winning product from Parent Tested Parent Approved. This is a seal of approval that families trust.

From their website - "It comes in pink, purple, and turquoise. SMOOBEE can be BEDAZZLED.
The more kids can customize their hairbrush, the more they are likely to brush their own hair. So let them BEDAZZLE their Smoobee with beautiful gem stickers and watch them fall in love! Gem stickers are sold separately."

I cannot stress enough how much of a lifesaver Smoobee has been to our daily life.

Smoobee - No Cry Hairbrush has generously offered one lucky winner a hairbrush of their own!

Review of Shooshoos Baby Shoes (Soft Soled Shoes for kids, too!)

I fell in love with Shooshoos Baby Shoes when Daniella was just a few months old and a friend of mine introduced me to them. I immediately thought that they were not only incredibly adorable baby shoes but I really liked how the sole was soft and that they were made from quality leather. Daniella was an early walker (at 9 months) so I knew I wanted her feet to be protected when she wasn't in the grass or indoors but I wanted her to feel the ground/floor beneath her. I wanted her to have flexibility in her shoes for those cute little toes to be able to move around and have room to grow. Now that she is 2 ½, I still want the same for her feet.

It has been about a year since Daniella outgrew her last pair of Shooshoos and I was super glad that Shooshoos agreed to do a review with me. Their shoes have the same excellent quality that I remember. And the "big kids" shoes are just as adorable as the baby shoes!

Daniella easily runs and plays in her Shooshoos. She has deemed them to be her new favorite shoes. She loves that she can easily put them on and take them off by herself. I love the independence factor too :).

The only minor issue I have noticed is a small amount of fraying here on this flower (which is at the edge of the "buckle", so truthfully, it gets handled a lot so I am sure that is why.)

I love that the soles are soft, but flexible! Perfect for small, but growing feet!

I just love these little tags on the heels. Super cute!

They fit her well with room to grow! Perfection.

Even after a bunch of wear time, the soles still look new!

She is already obsessed with shoes at her age and these are by far her first choice when I ask her to select a pair to wear.

Shooshoos was started in Cape Town, South Africa in 1996 and have grown into a worldwide brand with sales in over 20 countries, and growing fast! Selected by MOTHERCARE INTERNATIONAL. (550 Stores worldwide) as a leading leather baby shoe brand. Find Shooshoos Baby Shoes on Facebook and on Twitter too!

Modern Alternative Mama is Having an Earth Day Sale on Two e-Books!

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, Modern Alternative Mama is offering 50% off two of her books -- Against the Grain and Simply Summer.

Against the Grain is a wonderful book filled with grain-free meals, snacks, sides, and even desserts.  It focuses on a lot of vegetables and fresh flavors and is great for this time of year.  Most recipes are GAPS-friendly and all are gluten-free.

Simply Summer focuses on seasonal foods like spinach and other greens, strawberries, grilled meats, ice cream, and other fun summer foods.

Both books can be purchased for 50% off using code EARTHDAY.  This is for tomorrow only. (April 22, 2013).

I have done a few reviews of her books. I have not reviewed Against the Grain, so I cannot say much about it other than it looks interesting enough that I WANT to read it. Simply Summer, I do have and I LOVE IT. Lots of great summer-y recipes like a phenomenal lemon sorbet! Please note that by clicking on the pictures, it connects you to her page for purchasing the books and these links are affiliate links. Review with Giveaway for Cocomo Joe Foods (US Only, Ends 05/05/13)

I was very excited when Cocomo Joe Foods agreed to do a review with giveaway with me as all of their foods just sounded FABULOUS! I really enjoy the flavor of coconut so I really wanted to try out their foods!
I loved the assortment of items that sent us to try.

Doesn't their caramel popcorn just look divine? Like it would melt in your mouth???

Daniella is a HUGE popcorn fan right now but she HAD to share these with me! I was so sad when the two bags were empty :( They were DELICIOUS!!!!!!!

We also received a Joebar Sampler

I really enjoyed the unique flavors that they offered. Fig, Cocoa, Coffee, Green, Mango and Cranberry. I was not able to try the Mango (because I am allergic to mangoes) so Michael tried that one and he really liked it. I tried all of the other flavors, splitting them with the kids. Brandon did not care much for the texture of the bars but said the flavor was okay. Daniella gobbled them up with me (except for the green and the coffee).

We also tried two bags of granola - chocolate MILK granola and CRANBERRY cocomo GRANOLA.

Daniella and Brandon both enjoyed these with me as well. The other thing that we did not care for very much was the large chunks of figs within the chocolate variety. While the flavor of the figs was good, the size and thickness of them made it very difficult to chew them easily and in fact, Daniella came close to choking on one :( Luckily, I was sitting right next to her and fished it out of her mouth. That was how we discovered there was figs inside as she was the first one to find one! :)

Overall, except for those pesky figs chunks, we really enjoyed Cocomo Joe Foods! We can't wait to try more!!! One thing that I especially loved was that all of their products are made with all organic ingredients, to the highest standards.

Cocomo Joe Foods wants you to know that they are doing a promo right now -  Anyone who likes Cocomo Joe Foods on Facebook and goes on their site and orders can enter the promo code FB20 and they get 20% off!

Review with Giveaway for Zukay Live Foods (US Only, Ends 05/03/13) - ELEVEN WINNERS!

I have heard of lots of benefits to eating and drinking fermented foods so when I heard about the company Zukay Live Foods, I knew I have to contact them about doing a review! I was very excited when they responded with a yes! I quickly received a styrofoam case within a box that held one bottle of each of their flavors (shown above).

In the About Us section of their website, you can read how they were founded:
Hi! We’re Scott and Cathy Grzybek, and our story is a fairly simple one – perhaps, in many ways, like yours.

We’re just normal people. We’re both from rural, small-town Pennsylvania, and we had normal educations, worked normal jobs, and generally lived the good, hard-working lives expected of us. But over the years, as we got older and perhaps a bit wiser, we realized that our food sources weren’t working in our best interest.

Perhaps like yourself, we dabbled with health foods, jetting from one fad to another, but never really understanding WHAT was healthy, or what “health food” really was. All we knew was that the highly processed food and the confusion in our lives sure wasn’t making us healthier – just more out of shape than ever before.

Sometimes, though, things have a way of working themselves out. We were lucky enough to be able to move out to the beautiful Eastern Pennsylvania countryside, and we also found out about a way of living based on the whole food diets our ancestors ate. Armed now with a bit of land to play with and better knowledge than we ever had before, we quickly started growing everything we could. And it made all the difference for us.

But, food doesn’t store itself, and it doesn’t come out of the ground in a convenient fashion either. So, we learned about the ancient art of fermentation as the most natural, healthy way of preserving these wonderful gifts from our garden. And a love affair was born.

So, that’s where the idea for Zukay started. We couldn’t keep it to ourselves, and we wanted to pass on this most awesome way of eating and drinking to every one. We hope you love our products and appreciate the aura of love and gratitude we put into every bottle, and that we can be an important part of your path to a much healthier, happier you!

All our love,

Scott, Cathy, Jacob, and Noah Grzybek

Now I have been forewarned (so let me forewarn YOU) that fermented foods have a flavor that takes a bit to get used to. This is the flavor that our son chose to try and he shared with his sister.

Well, neither child liked it very much, though both were willing to try it and both drank at least 2 ounces each.

Now, Michael and I each decided to try a flavor as well. Michael chose the Veggie Medley based on the ingredient list. He liked it okay. You could taste the vegetables within and he liked that. I tried the Carrot Ginger. It had a very unique flavor. I really liked the blend of the ginger with the vegetables.

I cannot stress enough that I was super excited about having such a healthy, probiotic filled drink available during one of the worst sick seasons in a LONG time! Read more about the probiotics here.

Here is some more information regarding eating/drinking fermented/probiotic foods -

Overall, let me remind you that ANYTHING fermented takes time to get used to the flavors. With just a few bottles, that just isn't going to happen. But it made us feel better about trying MORE fermented foods and drinks now that we have tried the Zukay Live Foods drinks!

Anyone that likes Zukay Live Foods on Facebook and private messages them their home address can get a 4 page coupon book for $5.50 off of  7 bottles. Zukay Live Foods won't use your address for anything else! Just the booklet.

Zukay Live Foods has generously offered MULTIPLE prizes for MANY winners to have an opportunity to try their products!!
They want to give away a 6 pack of the winner's choosing/making ($24 dollar value) and ten free drink coupons to 10 runner ups! WOW!

Review with Giveaway for Biokleen (US only, Ends 04/28/13)

I had heard some really great things about Biokleen from other crunchy moms I know so when they agreed to do a review with me, I actually had a hard time deciding which of their products I wanted to review. They have such a great reputation for good products.

Here is the story of how they came to be -
In 1989, Biokleen's founder, Jim Rimer, had a mission: Create effective natural cleaning products for the environment and families who use them.  Decades later, Jim's vision has grown-from his garage with just an oar and a drum-to a nationwide movement. Biokleen's dedication to its roots has never wavered,  offering a full line of highly concentrated, plant-based cleaners, laundry and kitchen products that are free of harsh chemicals, and synthetic colors and fragrances. Now under the second generation of management, Biokleen's Northwest manufacturing facility proudly offsets 100% of the energy and water used in its production.

I finally did decide on one product - their produce wash. We do not purchase all organic produce so when we do purchase conventional produce, I like to have produce wash on hand to cleanse it well and to try to remove as much of the pesticides and such before consuming.

I love how detailed their ingredient list is!

Biokleen Concentrated Produce Wash effectively removes pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, waxes and soil from your fruits and vegetables for a healthier, safer diet and food preparation area. Helps hold natural taste and appearance longer, without the use of preservatives.
*Plant based surfactants with citrus essence
*Grapefruit seed & lime peel extracts
*No artificial fragrance, colors or preservatives
*100% full ingredient disclosure

Here it is in usage washing some blueberries. We do buy imported blueberries to try to avoid the Dirty Dozen but with berries, I usually try to wash them well still because their skin is so thin.

Rinsing the produce wash off

And here you can see the snack that I packed for Daniella to take to church, including the washed blueberries.

I have to say that I think this product does a very good job of washing my produce. I like that there is no residue left behind or any after taste related to the produce wash. Overall, I am very pleased with using this produce wash.

Biokleen has lots of household products. Here is a short list:

HAND MOISTURIZING DISHWASH LIQUID
AUTOMATIC DISH POWDER
ALL-TEMPERATURE CITRUS LAUNDRY POWDER
CHLORINE FREE OXYGEN BLEACH PLUS
NEW! BAC-OUT SEPTIC CARE

BAC-OUT FRESH NATURAL FABRIC REFRESHER
SUPER CONCENTRATED ALL PURPOSE CLEANER & DEGREASER

Plus lots more!

Review with Giveaway for The Kaleidoscope Kids (US Only, Ends 04/21/13)

The Kaleidoscope Kids is a fantastic learning tool for young children. This colorful and delightful story written by Terry P. O'Grady and illustrated by Rick Barrett helps your children learn their colors, shapes and numbers. What I really liked about this book is that so many children's books seem to focus on children learning their letters and this one avoided that! Plus, it is silly and imaginative and what child doesn't like that?

Daniella was excited to read this book on our recent trip to Florida for Easter! She really enjoyed flipping through the pages and trying to identify what she could and "read" the story to herself after her big brother read it to her!

Brandon also read it to her as bed time story! She loves to snuggle up with him while he reads to her. He really likes to read to Daniella. She has been learning her shapes much faster since we introduced her to The Kaleidoscope Kids! She can now identify circles, triangles and squares consistently. She had already been identifying colors fairly well. Now we are starting to focus on numbers more. She can identify numbers 1, 2 and 3. Hopefully, with the help of The Kaleidoscope Kids, she will be identifying even more soon!

Here is a short blurb from The Kaleidoscope Kids's website about the book so you can understand it a bit more:

This book was developed as way to help children to learn their colors, shapes, and numbers. The unique characters of this book were conceptualized as each having a shape, color, and number so that children can see these concepts together.

Each character is introduced with their shape, color, and number. There are also a number of objects on each page to practice counting. The hope is that this book will make learning these concepts fun, engaging, and easy for your child.

This section of their website also allows you to Meet the Characters!

You can also order a paperback or e-book version right from their website! For $1 off the Book Price, you can use the code: gnhc. a Rafflecopter giveaway
