Adorable Accessories for The Little Girls in Your Life at Gigi's Apparel (Review with Giveaway, Ends 10/25/13, US Only)

Disclosure: I received free items in exchange for my honest opinion about them.

Gigi's Apparel sent us a few items to review. Every single one of them is absolutely adorable! Every time that Daniella wears any of these, she always gets a gazillion comments about them and I frequently get asked where we got them from!

We were sent two flower hair pieces that are able to be used interchangeably with a white cloth headband. One is the Buckingham Headband and the other one is the Starfish Headband.

They are both stunning! I particularly love the size of the flowers. They are HUGE! Plus, you can even use the flower pieces alone, without the hairband as they clip onto the hairband or hair. Daniella does prefer them alone as the hairband is just slightly too big for her head still and she doesn't like that it slips sometimes. The only issue we have had with these is that the white one got some smudges of dirt on it and them only way to get them off would be to snip off the dirty spots with scissors. But of course, Daniella managed to get the dirt in places that are not easily reached by dirt :) That's my kid!

All cotton hats and headbands come with a removable hair clip so you may mix, match, and wash! Packaged in our signature round purple polka dot box with pink rose petals, these items make gift-giving a breeze.

The other item that Gigi's Apparel sent us to review is these gorgeous white lace tights!

Aren't they beautiful?!? I fell in love with them instantly! Daniella likes them too. See the itty bitty cute little roses just above the ankles? SO CUTE!
The only bummers here are that because they are so delicate, they must be hand washed. And, as seen in the photo below, after only three times of wearing them, one of the little roses came off :( But they are still very cute and we love them.

Gigis Apparel offers custom designed accessories for your little darling. Including unique flower headbands, flower hats, and lace leggings for little girls, toddlers, and infants.  Gigis Apparel pieces make wonderful gifts for any celebration including birthdays, weddings, photos, dress-up, or any special occasion. All our baby hats and headbands are packaged in a colorful round hat box for protection. Our baby products are hand-made in the USA from soft cotton that will fit perfectly and feel great.  We have an assortment of colors and styles to make your baby look like a princess.

Mmmmm...Do You Love Tea As Much As We Do? You Simply Must Brew Some Teatulia Tea! (Review with Giveaway, Ends 10/20/13, US and Canada Only)

Disclosure: We received free items in exchange for our honest opinion about them.

Teatulia Tea sent us a few varieties of tea to try. We don't often try loose leaf teas, but because we own a coffee brewer that has a built in filter, we thought we would try using it with the Teatulia loose leaf teas and it did GREAT!
  About Teatulia:
Teatulia Teas all come from our own single 2,000-acre tea garden in the North of Bangladesh. The Garden itself was established in 2000 to provide jobs for the people in the Tetulia region (where we get our name) – one of the poorest parts of one of the poorest countries in the world.

We used totally natural and organic farming methods that have restored the ecosystem in the entire region, bringing back plant & animal species as well as water bodies that had all but disappeared.  We now have one of the largest USDA-certified-organic gardens in the world and the only farm of any type that has USDA certification in Bangladesh.

The cornerstone of our social program is our cattle cooperative.  In order to have enough organic fertilizer for our 2,000-acre organic garden, we need a lot of cows. Instead of creating a cattle farm, we decided to give loans of cows to women in the community who in turn tend the cows while getting access to fresh milk and get to keep any offspring for themselves. Once they’ve paid off the loan however – which usually takes 2 years – they own the cows outright. There are women who are on their 4th or 5th cows, some are buying land, solar panels for their modest homes, and many are sending their children to University.

And then the tea. Teatulia teas & herbs are from a new growing region and grown using totally natural, pure inputs, so they taste different from any tea you’ve had. Our teas are full-bodied but the finish is sweet and smooth. No bitterness.
What Is Tulsi?
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), or “Holy Basil” is native to the Old World tropics and is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes as well as its essential oil.

Is there Caffeine?
Yes. Black tea contains about 50% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee.

Tasting Notes
Invigorating black tea blend with a rich, full-bodied spiciness. Excellent on ice.

Brewing Instructions
Tumble boiling water over the pyramid teabag or loose leaf tea. Steep 2 to 3 minutes. Enjoy. Repeat.

To Health
Tulsi has been the cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for over 5000 years. This sacred Indian herb has rich antioxidant and adaptogenic properties.

This tea was unlike any other tea that we have ever had before. We tried it over ice, as recommended. It has a spicier flavor than we are used to but was quite good when sweetened with raw honey and organic cow's milk. We did have to ensure that the honey was very well mixed with this particular variety.

What Is Lemongrass?
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon ciatrus) is a tall perennial grass that is native to warm and tropical regions. It is widely used in Indian cuisine.

Is there Caffeine?
Naturally caffeine-free!

Tasting Notes
Brisk, refreshing and clean with a pure lemon essence. An invigorating citrus indulgence.

Brewing Instructions
Tumble boiling water over the pyramid tea bag or loose leaf tea. Steep 4 to 5 minutes. Enjoy. Repeat.

To Health
Lemongrass leaves and stems are high in folic acid. Additionally, its herb parts are also rich in many invaluable essential vitamins such as pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) and thiamin (vitamin B-1). These vitamins are essential in the sense that the body requires them from external sources to replenish.

THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE TEA!!!!!! The flavor is just divine. I absolutely love it! I think I drank more than anyone else did by FAR! :)

What Is Green Tea?
Green tea hails from the two leaves and a bud of the Camellia sinensis plant that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing. The leaves are typically steamed or pan-fried.

Is there Caffeine?
Yes, about 2/3 less than coffee

Tasting Notes
Medium-bodied with earthy and grassy notes. A light finish with a refreshing cooling quality.

Brewing Instructions
Tumble water, just off the boil over the pyramid tea bag or loose leaf tea. Steep 2 to 3 minutes. Enjoy. Repeat.

To Health
Recent studies suggest that green tea contains powerful antioxidants. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet rays from the sun, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution) also give rise to these damaging particles.

For more in depth information go to

Green tea is one of our favorite kinds of tea and Teatulia did not disappoint us!  This tea had such a lovely flavor, especially when blended with raw honey and a splash of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Daniella enjoyed this tea the most.

All 10 Teatulia varieties are available whole leaf in pyramid teabags or loose leaf.

Teatulia Teas are single-garden direct sustainable teas that come directly from the first USDA-Certified Organic garden in Bangladesh.  Our approach to farming is truly revolutionary.  In our garden, we have implemented “natural farming” practices that result in a “closed loop” eco and social system.  No pesticides, machinery or unnatural irrigation are used in the cultivation.  The Teatulia Cooperative creates sustainable prosperity for Bangladeshi women, men and children through education, entrepreneurship, health and cattle-lending programs.  The result is unsurpassed purity, accountability and freshness.

Teatulia is generously offering a discount code so that you can try their tea and hopefully enjoy it as much as we have! For $5 off a minimum purchase of $20 - use discount code gupnblog5

Teatulia is also offering a giveaway for their Lemongrass Herbal Infusion and Tulsi Infusion.

Lemongrass is a blend of lemongrass and bay leaf from their garden in Bangladesh.

The Tulsi is a blend of their black tea and tulsi leaves both from their garden. Tulsi is an ayurvedic herb part of the basil family that has been used for thousands of years to treat treat colds, coughs, and flu. It promotes purity and lightness in the body, cleansing the respiratory tract of toxins and relieving digestive gas and bloating. Tulsi leaves offer a rich source of essential oil, containing eugenol, nerol, camphor, and a variety of terpenes and flavonoids. The oil is a strong antiseptic against many kinds of disease-causing organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

Decorate Your Home With Canvas Pop (Review with Giveaway, Ends 10/20/13, US and Canada Only)

Disclosure: I received two canvases in exchange for my honest opinion about them.

The two canvases on the outer sides are both from Canvas Pop. I was not supposed to originally review two canvases for them, but only one. Let me tell you about their stellar customer service that led me to end up with TWO 16x20" canvas print, with a 0.75" gallery wrap canvases and why I ended up falling in love with both of them in the end.

This is the canvas that I was originally sent by Canvas Pop to review. It is a canvas made from an uploaded cell phone picture of Daniella being goofy and striking a pose while modeling a shirt that I did a review for. It's an adorable picture, isn't it? I couldn't wait for it to arrive in the mail and stalked my mail carrier for days waiting on its arrival. But, when it arrived, I was quite disappointed. When I looked closely at her face on the canvas, it appeared distorted.  I was so saddened by that. I immediately emailed my Canvas Pop representative and let her know my thoughts about the canvas.

Close up picture of the canvas that has some distortion. It's hard to see in this picture though. Her face looks fuzzy.

She responded in LESS THAN 20 MINUTES! This was her fantastic response:

Oh no! That's not good, I'm so sorry to hear this. The designer did mention your image had a bit of a soft focus (caused from motion), that we smoothed out on our end. Perhaps that is what translated onto the larger print. This is definitely not the kind of quality we normally pride ourselves in. We do have a 100% love guarantee on our canvases, meaning if you don't like it...we reprint it free of cost. I'd love to send you out a new canvas, that you'll be able to proudly hang in your home.

She then asked me to send a new picture. I debated for a couple of days but finally selected another one and sent it to her. She again responded quickly. I received my new canvas within just a couple of weeks and I COULD NOT LOVE IT MORE THAN I DO!

This picture was taken on Daniella's first visit to a local splashpad where she had such a great time playing in the water! The canvas is beautiful and I absolutely love it. Because I ended up with two instead of the original one that I had planned, I hated the idea of not hanging up both of them even though I was not yet in love with the first canvas. The wall that I originally planned to hang just the one canvas was not large enough for them both so I reconfigured and added in another canvas that Michael had done for my first Mother's Day after Daniella was born and arranged the three together in our formal living room over the sofa. This is a very prominent wall that is seen as soon as you walk into our home. I have clients who are in my home almost daily, plus friends that drop by as well. In the approximate 2 months since they have hung there, I have received countless comments and feedback about the canvases. Everyone has loved them and thinks that they are simply adorable! The more that they have hung on the wall, the more that I have come to love BOTH of them. The distortion that is in the original canvas is not as prominent when viewing it from a distance. (i.e. the foyer/hallway that leads into the formal living room).

I just want to reiterate one last time what stellar customer service that Canvas Pop has. I cannot emphasize that enough. I am so super pleased with how they handled my concern.

And I just have to add in a small kudos to my husband, Michael, as he hung them on the wall and they actually hang evenly! You have no idea how proud of him that made me! :) Such a huge accomplishment in our home.

Oh, and don't let me forget to mention that Canvas Pop includes all hanging hardware installed, they use high quality piano wire, rubber bumpers to protect your wall and they even include the nail with which to hang it! Plus Canvas Pop is GREEN -

Flu Season is Coming! Want to Avoid Getting a Flu Shot?

We have a saying in our house at this time of year. You drive around town and see all of the signage for, "Come get your flu shots!" and we say, "Come and get your flu!". We have known countless people who have ONLY ever gotten the flu the year that they got their flu shot.

So what are some things that you CAN do to avoid getting the flu - or at least to make it not so harsh on your family if someone does so happen to bring it home?

Green Med Info has assembled a list of studies demonstrating more than 150 beneficial health effects of garlic! For example, studies show that regular consumption of (primarily raw) garlic:

May be effective against drug-resistant bacteria
Reduces risk for heart disease,2 including heart attack3 and stroke
Helps normalize your cholesterol4 and blood pressure
Protects against cancer,5, 6 including brain,7 lung,8 and prostate9 cancer
Reduces risk of osteoarthritis10
It’s thought that much of garlic’s therapeutic effect comes from its sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin, which are also what give it its characteristic smell. Other health-promoting compounds include oligosaccharides, arginine-rich proteins, selenium and flavonoids.11

Research12 has revealed that as allicin digests in your body, it produces sulfenic acid, a compound that reacts with dangerous free radicals faster than any other known compound.

This is one of the reasons why I named garlic as one of the top seven anti-aging foods you can consume. Garlic is also a triple threat against infections, offering antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

Garlic may be particularly useful in preparation for cold and flu season, as it contains compounds capable of killing a wide variety of organisms, including viruses and bacteria that can cause earaches, colds and influenza. The respected research organization Cochrane Database—which has repeatedly reported that the science does not support the use of flu vaccine as a first-line defense—has also reviewed studies on the alternatives, such as the use of garlic.15

Another immune building booster:

VITAMIN D - preferably D3, not D2.

Yes, the best way to get vitamin D is from sunlight - always have that be your first choice. But Vitamin D3 is the best supplement, if necessary.

According to Dr. Mercola, Vitamin D can cut your flu risk nearly in half!!

According to the findings from a 2010 study that didn't get any widespread attention, vitamin D is a highly effective way to avoid influenza.

In fact, children taking low doses of Vitamin D3 were shown to be 42 percent less likely to come down with the flu.

The randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study included 430 children aged 6-15, who were followed between December 2008 and March 2009.

Half were given 1,200 IU's of vitamin D3 daily, while the other half received a placebo.

Influenza strains were determined through lab testing of nose and throat swabs.

Eighteen of the children taking vitamin D contracted influenza Type A, compared to 31 children in the placebo group.

Type B influenza rates were unaffected by vitamin D use, however, the illness resulting from Type B influenza strains is typically milder than Type A.

Considering the fact that influenza was reduced by 42 percent at a dose of just 1,200 IU's a day, it's possible that even better results might be obtained with higher dosages—depending on just how deficient you are to begin with, of course, because it's not really the dosage that matters; it's the amount of vitamin D in your blood.

Another great immune booster for fighting against the flu is Vitamin C!

This vitamin is super easy to get through your food (and no, I am not talking about foods supplemented with vitamin C!)

Foods that naturally contain Vitamin C include:
Citrus Fruits
Red and Green Hot Chili Peppers
Bell Peppers
Brussel Sprouts
Mustard Greens
and more!

Eat lots during the flu season. Eat large leafy salads with plenty of peppers every day. Make sure to eat a piece of citrus fruit with every meal. You can easily get plenty of vitamin C this way!

Become *slightly* germ-obsessed, at least for the next couple of months. Wash your hands a little more often (Tea Tree Soap is a great germ fighting soap!) and wipe down kitchen and toy surfaces more often.

Vinegar and water or rubbing alcohol and water are great natural germ fighters that you can safely spray around your children! We have a separate spray bottle for each that is clearly labeled and do about a 50/50 ratio. We use washcloths for cleaning and then simply toss them in the laundry and repeat!

I often hear about elderberry in my holistic crowds but I have never personally used it (well, other than the elderberry wine my Gramps used to make!) It is so sweet it is used in jams, lemonades, and yes, wine, elderberry is packed with quercetin (which is an antioxidant that has antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties). This is a native European, Asian, and North American plant which may also help activate the immune system. Research suggests that you take 1 to 2 teaspoons four times daily for three to four days when feeling sick.  You might also want to try sipping elderberry tea which can also soothe flu symptoms.

This is another herb that I don't have a lot of experience with except as an added ingredient with some remedies. Having antiviral and antibacterial properties, this traditional Native American remedy contains polysaccharides that can raise levels of infection-fighting white blood cells, among other functions. It is recommended getting 3 grams of Echinacea purpurea (a well-studied species) daily when you are feeling sick, but make sure that you reduce the dose when you begin to feel better. Be weary of using echinacea if there are severe allergies to the aster family of plants in your family history though.

We often use ginger in our home for upset tummies of any kind. Ginger is a very pungent root that can act as an antihistamine and decongestant. Try tossing some fresh, chopped ginger into a stir-fry meal or even into some soup or bone broth to lessen symptoms or use it to make a strong cup of ginger tea which is another favorite in our home.

Here is a simple ginger tea recipe I found online long ago and no longer remember the source:

Remove the skin from a piece of fresh ginger.
Then cut off about a 2 inch piece.
Slice up the ginger and add it to 2 cups of water.
Simmer the mixture uncovered for 20 minutes.
Pour the mixture into a mug, add a tablespoon (or more to taste) of honey and the juice from a fresh-squeezed lemon.

What does your family plan to do to fight off the flu this year?

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home (Review with Giveaway, Ends 10/18/13, US Only)

Disclosure: I received a free product in exchange for my honest opinion about it.

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home

The Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle is a new love of mine! Those of you who are working towards a Real Food diet may have seen some research on the dangers of various cookware. Here is a short blog post that my chiropractor did a while back that mentions is a bit briefly. Please read Brooke and the Cooking Show.

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home

An attractive update on the classic kitchen staple, Brylane Home's glass kettle brings water to boil in minutes.

• heat-resistant glass
• safe for both gas and electric stove tops
• features an air-cooled handle and trivet for electric ranges
• dishwasher safe
• sells beautiful drinkware that matches this kettle’s elegant look

This 12-cup glass kettle features a modern design and is perfect for entertaining.

This is my old, clunky tea kettle that I am sure was leaching horrible chemicals into my hot water! I am so glad to have it be gone and to be using a much safer alternative for my family.

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home

We use this tea kettle several times every week. We use it for tea, oatmeal, and any other time that we need boiling water. My 11 year old son even uses it on his own very easily. My daughter loves that she can watch it to see how much longer she has to wait!

Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle by Brylane Home

I do want to warn you that if you really let the water boil a lot, then you will need to use a potholder to lift the kettle by the plastic handle. I did also notice that the whistle is not very loud so if you are waiting for it, pay close attention!
Overall, this is an inexpensive tea kettle which makes it a GREAT option for those of you who are trying to make baby steps towards making changes within your home towards a healthier environment. I really couldn't be more pleased with it.

Other products offered by BrylaneHome include cookware, bedding, bath products, furniture, decor and so much more. Certainly, you can find what you are looking for for your home on their website! :)

Brylane Home has generously offered a giveaway for one lucky winner to win a Whistling Mate Glass Tea Kettle, too!!!

Lovely Hair Accessories From Lilla Rose (Review with Giveaway, Ends 10/15/13, US, Canada, and Mexico ONLY)

Disclosure: I received a free product in exchange for my honest opinion about it.

This is the gorgeous Scrollwork Heart Flexi clip that I received to review for Melissa's Lilla Rose-Independent Consultant. I wish the picture was better but I kept getting horrible flash glares! This picture does not do this clip ANY justice as it is simply beautiful! Go to the link though, it shows just how beautiful it truly is!
I needed a size large as I have very thick and long hair. Check out the Lilla Rose Sizing Chart to help determine what size you will need!

Of course, shortly after receiving the clip, I cut my hair and made a 7" donation of three ponytails to Locks of Love. Here my hair is not as long as I normally wear it. Knowing that I would simply regrow my hair to where it had been, I chose the larger size . But at least these pictures give you an idea of how I wore the Flexi Clip!

I did have some trouble initially getting the Clip to fasten. I don't know if that was just "operator deficiency" or if it was due to the hair cut. My hair has already regrown several inches so I should be able to determine that better soon! :)

I still cannot get over how simply gorgeous the hair clip is. I really, really love it and cannot wait to use it more often. I love that I can easily dress it up or tone it done. I can wear it with a fancy dress or just with jeans! :)

The Flexi Clip is patented by the founder, John Dorsey. This is marked on the clip.  Lilla Rose and his original company Flexi-8 is the only place you can buy them!

Lilla Rose has a variety of products besides the Flexi Clip, including bobby pins, hair sticks, badge holders, and you-pins.

One of Melissa's favorite facts about the Flexi Clip is that they are made with music wire which is what makes them so flexible and they are hand made.

If you are left handed, you can get the Flexi Clip switched so that the design is facing the right way.  To do this just let the consultant know before you order so that she can alert the company of which Flexis you need left handed.   You may also want to do this with minis in sets of two so you can wear them as barrettes.  Some designs are the same either way so they wouldn't need to be adjusted.

Melissa is running a special sale - just for you! Buy 3 Get 1 Free:  Any new Lilla Rose customer that orders 3 items and registers on her site (, will earn 1 free product up to $16.  To redeem, you must email her at with your customer number, order number for the first 3 items, and the item number for your free item choice. This would be great to grab and stick away for a Christmas present for someone on your list!!

Melissa has generously offered a giveaway!! The giveaway is for a FREE ITEM up to $16. To redeem the free item you must register as a customer on her site.
